Forthy-seven cyclists participating in the Alive 2015 Cycling Challenge for Cancer have found important support from Express Trailers who offered to transport the athletes’ bicycles and cycling equipment by container from Malta to Lichtenstein.

Lichtenstein is the start of the challenge. During the 1,000km cycling challenge, the cyclists will pass through seven countries in seven days, namely Lichtenstein, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, France and the UK. They are cycling eight hours a day in an attempt to cover a daily distance of about 160km.

The challenge is being organised in collaboration with Puttinu Cares in aid of the University’s Research Trust. The money will support a PhD student who is currently researching the effects of treatment based on previous research on brain tumours and neuroblastoma, a tummy cancer found in children. This treatment aims at removing cancer cells while minimising many of the side effects of chemotherapy.

Franco Azzopardi, chairman and CEO of Express Group met the participants at Express Trailers’ premises where they convened to load all their bicycles and equipment inside an Express Trailers container.

“The altruistic hallmark of Express Trailers is supporting the vulnerable road user. We admit that we are a nuisance on the roads, even though it is necessary to do our job of transporting food, pharma and cargo. The Alive Challenge initiative fits into our programme seamlessly, especially also because it too demonstrates solidarity and altruism,” said Mr Azzopardi.

“We are proud to be in a position to support such a great initiative by a group of people who want to help a worthy cause. Our network of operations across mainland Europe made it possible for us to offer our logistical support and helping the 47 cyclists participating in this year’s edition of the Alive 2015 Cycling Challenge for Cancer get all their cycling gear safely and in time to Lichtenstein,” added Azzopardi.

“As a company whose commitment is to deliver any size of load safely and securely, we also augur all the participants a safe experience on Europe’s roads and we look forward to welcoming them back in Malta,” Azzopardi said.
