Over the years Malta has acquired a solid reputation in the transportation logistics industry thanks to its high level of service and ideal geographic positioning. Malta is already one of the leading transhipment pivots for maritime trade in the Mediterranean. With 3,600 local companies employing over 9,000 people involved in the transportation and storage sector, the industry could be seen as a new source of foreign direct investment.

According to the National Statistics Office’s Malta in Figures report, the transportation and storage sector increased by 34.6 per cent since 2005 in terms of turnover and these figures are expected to increase even further. Malta’s economy is very dependent on foreign trade with its main imports and exports being mineral fuels and oils. The country is also a net importer of electrical machinery, aircraft and other maritime transport equipment, and food and beverage products.

Using the European Union as its most important trading partner, the island has developed vast trade flows with the UK, Germany, France and Italy. This on its own supplies 18 per cent of Malta’s total imports. Meanwhile, electrical machinery and pharmaceutical products rank high in Malta’s main exports. Making up seven per cent of the total exported products and being the third highest export commodity, the pharmaceutical industry is one of the most important industries on the island. All these imports and exports require logistics and Malta is rapidly gaining momentum as a distribution depot for international sales of pharmaceutical and retail products.

GMC Transport delved into these market developments and consequent requirements and anchored itself with a solid network of professionals specialising in various logistical fields. Offering a trustworthy, reliable and quality service was always GMC Transport’s priority and implementing ISO 9001:2008 standards in line with good distribution practices proved to be the backbone of the company’s success.

Due to this economic growth, one must acknowledge the need for flexibility and innovation. New perspectives to drive a sense of direction at this challenging moment are imperative to be part of this reputable transportation, logistics and supply chain hub.
