A 50-year-old woman was jailed for six months and fined €1,000 for loitering for prostitution purposes and threatening and insulting a woman police sergeant by claiming the officer tried to touch her.

Josephine Grixti had originally been charged with her boyfriend Clayton Fenech, 26.

The couple had been charged with assaulting and robbing their neighbour in Testaferrata Street, Gzira on July 21, 2014, at about 1am.

The neighbour, Robert Thomas Owen, had said he was on his way home when Ms Grixti asked him for a cigarette. He gave her the cigarette but then she offered him sex. When he refused she asked him for cash and, when he refused that, Mr Fenech turned up and threatened him. He then filed a police report.

Police started looking for the couple and, on September 10, the police spotted Ms Grixti in Marsa.

Police Sergeant Donna Frendo told her she was being arrested in connection with the July incident. Ms Grixti initially refused to obey and go with police and started telling the officer she would strip her of her uniform and that, in the past, she had tried to touch her.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke noted that she could not find Mr Fenech and Ms Grixti guilty of the July incident since evidence showed that the incident did not happen in Testaferrata Street, Ta' Xbiex, as laid down in the charge sheet, but in Sir Ugo Mifsud Street, Gzira.

However, it was sufficiently proven that Ms Grixti had loitered for prostitution, as the charge said it happened in Ta' Xbiex and other areas.

The magistrate cleared Mr Fenech of all charged but found Ms Grixti guilty of loitering, threatening and insulting the officer, disobeying the police and breaching the peace.
