Reports in newspapers said that the EU has closed the infringement case relating to the spring hunting of turtle dove and quail.

Are not turtle dove now a declared threatened species? Why, with the world more aware than ever of the threat to more and more species facing extinction, and even the air we breathe and the planet itself, is the EU even thinking of weakening the already weak laws that protect what’s left of nature not just in Malta but throughout the EU?

What credence are we to give to expensive summits that talk of the threatened environment, global warming, conservation, recycling?

Are we to take seriously then all the exhortations to save this, recycle that, walk don’t ride, take your litter home with you, save a tree, etc? Meanwhile, self-seeking, short-sighted lobbyists see only sum or profit in destroying the inheritance of our children.

The world is no longer deaf or blind and the EU is what we look to for a lead in a sadly uphill struggle to save what is left of our planet, its environment, its wildlife and us!

Practice what you preach EU, not go backwards. Remember when your grandchildren will ask: “What is a bird daddy? And did dinosaurs, whales and elephants once live on earth?”

It is us now who would have to say: “We don’t know about the dinosaurs, but we killed the rest... for fun, trophies and money... sorry ‘bout that son.”

History – if there’s anyone left – will condemn us as the custodians of their future for what we are doing – or not doing – to our, and their, world. Let’s not let it come to that!
