Ryan: Valencia are closing in on signing Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan from Club Brugge. The Belgian club announced yesterday they had given the 23-year-old international permission to travel to Spain to complete his transfer for an undisclosed fee. Valencia are keen to strengthen at the back with first-choice goalkeeper Diego Alves sidelined until next year with a knee injury.

Rangers: Rangers are on the verge of signing Wigan pair James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn. The two players were at the Ladbrokes Championship club’s Murray Park training ground yesterday to undergo medicals. Tavernier, a 23-year-old right-back, and 25-year-old striker Waghorn are set to follow Andy Halliday in signing for the club after the former Middlesbrough and Bradford winger penned a two-year contract on Saturday.

Le Fondre: Cardiff striker Adam Le Fondre has revealed he is leaving the Championship club. Le Fondre joined Cardiff from Reading in May 2014 after scoring 41 goals in 110 appearances for the Royals.

Gomez: Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez appears to be on his way out of Fiorentina with Besiktas likely to be his next destination. Calciomercato reported that Fiorentina had accepted a €6m bid by the Turkish club for the former Germany striker. Gomez has been offered a three-year deal worth €5m per season.

Zenit win: Champions Zenit St Petersburg made a winning start to the new Russian Premier League season with a 2-1 home victory over Dinamo Moscow. Dinamo took a 29th-minute lead through Aleksandr Kokorin but then had Tomas Hubocan sent off just before half-time. From the penalty that followed, Hulk fired into the right corner. The visitors held out with 10 men until the 68th minute when Oleg Shatov grabbed the winner.

Ciftci: Celtic striker Nadir Ciftci will miss the first six games of the domestic season after being found guilty of a biting offence. The summer signing from Dundee United received an eight-game ban – two of which are suspended – after being found guilty of biting Jim McAlister during a Dundee derby on the final day of last season.
