I refer to the article ‘Road to Gaffarena is paved with taxpayer’s cash’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, July 12).

The road referred to was surfaced as part of a project financed through the European Agricultural Fund for rural development. Seventy-two roads will be improved around Malta and Gozo at a cost of around €7 million.

In 2013 an e-mail was circulated by the Ministry for European Affairs and the Implementation of the Manifesto, whereby local councils were asked to identify rural roads that needed repairs.

Transport Malta distributed the budget among all localities and a number of eligible roads from each locality were selected according to established criteria.

Part of Triq Għarram, which is also being referred to in the article, is one of the roads which will be improved through this project. Triq it-Tiġieġ, in the same area, will be improved as well.

Editor’s note: Transport Malta was sent a number of questions on this subject on the morning of Friday, July 10 but did not respond. Furthermore, the above reply does not explain why certain roads were repaired while others were not.
