I sincerely thank Albert Ganado for his kind comments on my article on the origin and development of Valletta’s Manderaggio (The Sunday Times of Malta, July 12). No words are enough to praise Ganado for his great knowledge on Maltese maps and his authority and contributions on the subject. Above all, I also thank him for having been a good friend and tutor for so many years.

Regarding the map by Pierre Mortier featured in the article, during my initial research I had encountered a number of contemporary maps, some described in my article. Their source varied from the internet to subject study books including Ganado’s own book Valletta Città Nuova.

The only reason the map by Mortier was chosen was because it showed an old and colourful view of Valletta and I had not realised the story behind it as described by Ganado in his letter. Ganado’s correction is much appreciated.
