New appointments to Greece's cabinet were sworn in today after a reshuffle to replace leftist lawmakers who refused to back negotiations for a tough new bailout deal.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras sacked rebels yesterday, including his former energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis and two deputy ministers who were among the 39 Syriza hardliners who did not support the government over the measures.

The ceremony was presided over by the country's President, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, a largely ceremonial role.

Although some, including the new deputy Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis, a leading member of Greece's tax experts' union, chose a traditional religious swearing-in ceremony, most Syriza members opted for the civic version.
