Talks to rope in a strategic investor for Air Malta have entered a “critical” phase, according to Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis.

He described negotiations held a few days ago in the Chinese capital over Air Malta’s future as “positive” but kept all cards to his chest.

Asked about the talks yesterday after presiding over the announcement of a €15 million investment by the Hilton Malta Hotel, Dr Zammit Lewis declined to give further details.

He reiterated the government was seeking a strategic partner to give “more relevance” to Air Malta as part of its effort to make it commercially viable.

“I cannot go deeper into the subject because, at such a critical stage of the talks, details are commercially sensitive,” Dr Zammit Lewis said.
