A skatepark built by the previous St Paul’s Bay local council “usurped” public land and had no planning permit, the Times of Malta has learnt.

Rudy’s Skatepark, named after the council’s youth ambassador, Rudy Dorkens, was developed just three weeks before last April’s local elections.

Sources close to the Labour Party in the locality said former mayor Raymond Tabone had acted without informing fellow councillors and they only got to know about the park after the election when residents in the area started complaining about the mayhem caused by youngsters.

Attempts to contact Mr Tabone proved unsuccessful. Phone calls and text messages remained unanswered.

St Paul’s Bay switched allegiance to the Nationalist Party after the election and newly-elected mayor Graziella Galea confirmed the present council was “lumped” with a big problem.

Distancing the new council’s administration from the project, Ms Galea said she was discovering new things about the skatepark every day.
