Valletta council has managed to identify a government employee who every day at 7 am dumps a black garbage bag at the corner of Republic Street with Christopher Street. The bag is collected 10 hours later.

Valletta Mayor Alexiei Dingli said that when the employee was asked why he was disposing refuse in this way, he replied: "Is this place yours?"

Dr Dingli said  on Facebook that fines of between €58 and €2000 are being issued since Valletta is a heritage site and needed to be taken care of.

Meanwhile, a man is due to be taken to court after he was recorded on recently installed CCTV dumping waste at Wied Ghammieq, near Kalkara.

The man is seen carrying boxes and bottles of waste oil out of his car and dumping them.

Security cameras are being installed by the government at various sites where dumping takes place regularly.

Convicted people are liable for fines and can have their cars seized.
