I believe that Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella was right in pointing out that it is Malta Enterprise that should be answering questions regarding the whereabouts of Sai Mizzi (July 11).

However, what is so important about the office where she is stationed? The correspondent asking the questions should have realised that these days, given the modern techniques that we have, executives can work from anywhere.

For example, I take my two weeks’ summer holidays in Corfu but I can still do mountains of work there. I even take my computer to the platform where I water ski and, in between runs, I read and answer my e-mails, read and draw up reports and do other work that I normally do in my office in Malta.

When I need to speak to one of my managers or sales people I immediately get on my phone and clear up the matter that may have been bugging me.

At one point, the minister was quizzed about the work Mizzi is doing. In my dealings with Chinese firms during the past 25 years I have learned that patience is needed as Chinese companies take far longer than European ones to make a decision. Therefore, it is not difficult for me to understand the time that it is taking Mizzi to get companies to come and operate from Malta.

However, that is not all.

I understand that she was instrumental in bringing over Huawei, the great Chinese ICT company which is serving one third of the world’s population. This company’s directors are signing an MOU with the Maltese government this week.

Huawei will be a great addition to Shanghai Electric, which are already working in Malta.

Furthermore, if Mizzi can also organise the visa situation in Shanghai, which at the moment leaves much to be desired, she would, no doubt, be more than earning her keep.
