Economy Minister Chris Cardona said Sai Mizzi-Liang is already working from the Maltese Consulate General in Shanghai, even though it is still being refurbished.

Last week, Foreign Minister George Vella said he had no idea where the Energy Minister’s wife – appointed as trade envoy by Malta Enterprise for Asia – was working from.

He said that eventually, when the new consulate’s office was opened in Shanghai, she would be working from there.

Dr Cardona, whose portfolio includes Malta Enterprise, yesterday said Ms Mizzi-Liang was working from the Shanghai office even though it had not yet been completed.

The deal on the new €1.9 million office for the consulate was signed only last March and refurbishment works are under way.

Sai Mizzi-Liang is paid €13,000 a month and has been in Shanghai since August 2013.
