Birkirkara are closing in on the signing of young goalkeeper Philip Schranz, from Melita.

The Stripes have been forced to delve into the market as both first-team goalkeepers are currently struggling with injury.

Birkirkara’s no.1 Justin Haber is sidelined with a thigh strain he suffered during the Europa League home match against FC Ulisses at the Hibs Stadium.

His replacement, Ini Akpan, also sustained a muscle injury during last week’s return match in Yerevan. The Nigerian is expected to recover in time for Thursday’s match at West Ham United but the Stripes still moved in for Schranz as they want to increase their pool of goalkeepers.

Schranz, the former Malta U-21 international, is considered among the most talented young goalkeepers around. However, if the transfer does go through he will not be included in Birkirkara’s squad for the trip to London as the registration deadline is over.

Coach Giovanni Tedesco is still hoping to recover Haber before Thursday but if the Malta international is deemed unfit the Stripes will again bank on Akpan and the young Justin Tonna.

Rainbows sign Brazilian quartet

Tarxien Rainbows secured the services of four Brazilian players for the upcoming season.

Midfielder Carlos Hevia was confirmed for another year and he will be joined by defenders Diego Massimo and Bruno Oliveira and forward Danilo.

For Danilo, this will be his second spell at Tarxien having donned their colours in 2012-13.

In that season, Danilo netted eight goals before he left the Maltese league during the January transfer window.
