De Roon: Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon joined Atalanta from Heerenveen, the Serie A club said. The transfer was finalised yesterday after talks between both clubs had started earlier this month. Reports said the transfer fee was €1.25m. De Roon, 24, has signed a three-year contract and he has an option for a fourth year included in his deal.

Coentrao: Real Madrid’s Portugal defender Fabio Coentrao will miss the trip to Australia for the International Champions Cup friendly tournament after returning from holiday with a thigh injury. Real are due to play Roma at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Saturday and Manchester City at the same venue six days later before heading to China to play Inter and Milan.

Gold Cup: El Salvador salvaged a 1-1 draw with Costa Rica when substitute Dustin Corea scored a 91st-minute equaliser in their CONCACAF Gold Cup match in Houston yesterday. Costa Rica had one foot in the quarter-finals when they paid a price for sloppy defending from a free-kick. The result leaves both teams with two points from two matches in Group B, while Jamaica have four points after beating Canada 1-0 in the early game, a result that leaves Canada with a solitary point.

Fiji through: Fiji’s Under-23 men’s side advanced to next year’s Olympic Games in Rio after a 4-3 victory on penalties over Vanuatu following New Zealand’s expulsion from the final for fielding an ineligible player during the tournament semi-finals. Yesterday’s final had ended 0-0 after extra time. Fiji are the first country other than Australia or New Zealand to represent Oceania at the Olympic soccer tournament.

Thorup: Denmark U-21 boss Jess Thorup will step down to take over as manager of league champions Midtjylland. Having taken over in 2013, Thorup’s side went unbeaten through qualification for the European U-21 Championship and des-pite losing to eventual winners Sweden in the semi-final, the Danes qualified for the Olympic tournament at Rio 2016. Midtjylland won the Danish league for the first time last season.
