A team of seven Form 5 students from St Ignatius College’s Boys’ Secondary School, Ħandaq, Qormi, won this year’s Social Innovation Challenge organised by Junior Achievement (Young Enterprise) Malta Foundation.

Over 60 students in nine teams from various schools participated in the challenge, which was to devise innovative ways to tackle youth illiteracy in Malta.

The Ħandaq students, who came from different subject areas, drew up a business plan to tackle the challenge, which included devising a story, producing a DVD, marketing, promoting and costing the initiative.

In the process the students practised problem solving, communication, presentation and creativity skills, and experienced entrepreneurship.

The students – Wayne Formosa, Owen Scerri, Luke Jurgen Briffa, Wayne Bonnici, Noel D’Anastasi, Owen Dimech and Andrei Amaira – were assisted by a volunteer and business mentor. College career advisor Dorianne Gravina was the school’s link person for the event.

The students won a Nokia Lumia each and a trophy for the school.

The challenge was supported by Microsoft Malta.
