In his first year at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal succeeded in turning the club’s fortunes as the Red Devils secured a place in the Champions League.

Newcastle United saved their status on the very last day of the campaign.

When manager Alan Pardew left Newcastle for Crystal Palace, the club appointed John Carver on an interim basis but the team went into freefall. At the end, Carver managed to keep the Magpies afloat in dramatic fashion.

The fans witnessed a season of ups and downs at Old Trafford but in the last phase of the championship, Van Gaal did well to steer the team to a top-four finish.

Goalkeeper David de Gea performed heroics to save United’s blushes on many occasions. His stand-out match, among many, was the victory over Everton at Old Trafford in which he became the first goalkeeper to save a Leighton Baines penalty in the league.

De Gea was voted Manchester United player of the year for the second season running.

After a promising start to his Old Trafford career, record signing Angel Di Maria’s performances deteriorated.

His poor season sparked a huge debate as to what caused Di Maria’s dramatic loss of form.

Newcastle finished in 15th place, five positions down on the previous term. They made a terrible start, failing to win any of their opening seven league matches.

Pardew’s exit in late December further compounded matters.

The Newcastle fans, who had repeatedly called for the manager’s dismissal, probably felt that Pardew was not to blame for the deep-rooted problems at the club but they could not have anticipated the scale of the team’s collapse under Carver.

Before Pardew’s departure, Newcastle were ninth but thereafter they embarked on a run of eight consecutive defeats and almost got relegated in the end.

In the FA Cup, Manchester United reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Life in the League Cup was short as Van Gaal’s second-string side went down heavily to MK Dons 4-0 in the second round.

Newcastle bowed out at the first time of asking in the FA Cup – to Leicester away in round three.

The Toon met their waterloo in the fourth round of the League Cup, losing at Manchester City.
