Philippe Mexes has agreed a new one-year deal with Milan.

The French defender’s previous deal with the Rossoneri expired last week.

A statement from the Serie A club read: “AC Milan announces that Philippe Mexes has extended his contract until June 30, 2016, and will be at Milanello on Saturday.”

Mexes joined Milan from Roma in the summer of 2011 and has since made 81 appearances for the San Siro outfit.

The 33-year-old started just 18 league games during the 2014-15 campaign and it was widely re-ported he would leave San Siro at the end of the season.

Milan are looking for a spark after enduring two disappointing campaigns.

The Rossoneri, under coach Filippo Inzaghi, finished 10th in Serie A last season and will therefore miss out on European football once again having finished eighth the previous year.

Milan sacked Inzaghi last month and appointed former Sampdoria coach Sinisa Mihaj-lovic as his replacement.

They have strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Italy midfielder Andrea Bertolacci from Genoa and Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Colombian forward Carlos Bacca has also joined Milan on a permanent transfer from Sevilla.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that Milan had cleared a major hurdle in their plans to build a new stadium after their bid to acquire the city’s former trade fair grounds was approved by the foundation which owns the land.

Milan, who currently share the ageing municipal San Siro stadium with rivals Inter, are planning to build a 48,000-capacity arena in time for the 2018-19 campaign.

“It is the first historic step,” said club director Barbara Berlusconi.

“The decision of the Fondazione Fiera Milano (Milan Fairs Foundation) is the start of the path which, in our intention, will lead to a new stadium. It is a first step because we will have to submit the entire project to the institutions for approval.”

Berlusconi predicted that the stadium would bring in between 50 million and 80 million euros a year in extra revenue.
