The former CEO of Mimcol and Malta Government Investments Ltd has written to the Auditor-General saying he had resigned from his post, despite a generous remuneration package, because he had been in a minefield in which he was not prepared to continue to tread.

The letter, by Vince Mifsud, was copied to Tonio Fenech as chairman of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee and read during a meeting of the committee this evening.

Mr Mifsud said: “Over the past two years, I was precluded from involving myself in all spheres of responsibility under Mimcol and MGI (Malta Government Investment Ltd) which, I believe, is part and parcel of the work of the CEO.

“I was specifically asked to concentrate purely on operational matters and to disassociate myself completely from matters of an administrative nature.

"This naturally meant that I was kept completely in the dark about administrative matters while still expected to retain my post as CEO,” he said.

He said he had tried to assert himself as CEO for the past two years, but his efforts were unsuccessful. He felt he was in a minefield in which he was not prepared to continue to tread.

Mr Fenech asked the Auditor-General what his office would do about the issue.

The Auditor-General said this did not appear to fall within the remit of his Office as it was a matter of conditions of work and matters of policy.

Labour MP Charles Mangion said he felt the Audit Office had acted wisely. He noted that the Office took no action when Mario Vella was 'locked' in a room and given no work for years.

Times of Malta reported Mr Mifsud's resignation last week, at the height of a controversy after an 18-year-old was appointed by Mimcol as director in a new government company. The newspaper had reported that Mr Mifsud was excluded from all recruitment procedures.
