Steve Martin and Tyrone Borg, two professional fighters within the Malta Boxing Association fold, won their respective contests at the Prize Boxing Promotions ‘Reloaded’ series organised recently by Demis Tonna and staged at the former Trade Fair Grounds, Naxxar.

In front of a sell-out crowd, Martin won his contest against Ferenc Szelkalas by a technical knock-out in the fifth round and Borg also prevailed in his fight when opponent Peter Zsilak went down in the second round and the referee stepped in to halt the bout.

Present for the occasion was European Boxing Union president Bob Logist. The EBU is the sport’s governing body on the continent and Logist’s visit was a historic moment for boxing in Malta.

Logist, of Belgium, was given more feedback about the new emerging sport and its development on our shores.

He also held talks with his counterparts from the Malta Boxing Association.

As a result of the discussions, MBA chief executive officer, Marc James, is now expected to put forward a request on behalf of the local organisation for the EBU to give its green light and consider Maltese boxers to be included in the new Elite League, a recognised professional European structure.

During his stay Logist analysed the local talent and the ones who caught the eye most, and likely to be considered for the new project, were Richard Vella, Keith Azzo-pardi, Christian Schembri and Brendon Borg.

Meanwhile, the Reloaded boxing evening included other bouts and the contest that drew most of the attention in the undercard was the one involving former Maltese international soccer defender Luke Dimech.

Dimech, now on the books of his first-love Sliema Wanderers FC, had an excellent debut as he won on points against Redent Galea. The contest was over four rounds of two minutes each.

Others who won their bouts in the lead-up to the main events were Duncan Calleja, Kerstin Brown, Lydon Chircop, Daniel Micallef and Garth Galea.

Michael Carter drew his contest over four rounds.
