A bus driver was fined €1,000 and banned from driving for three months after he was found guilty of driving negligently and crashing into a parked truck.

The bus driver, Ivan Gauci, was also found guilty of injuring three passengers – who were on the bus – as a result of his negligence on August 20, 2013, at about 6am.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard how the incident happened in Triq Wied il-Għajn, Zabbar, when the King Long bus driven by Mr Gauci crashed into the parked truck. Three women on the bus suffered injuries.

Mr Gauci said the accident was not his fault but was the result of the fact that the truck was parked on a bend and was jutting out. He also said that he was not driving fast and the accident happened because it was still dark and he did not see the parked truck.

But the magistrate found that his version was not credible. The sun had risen at the time of the collision and, had he been driving at a slow speed, the damage to the truck would have been much less.

Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.
