July will be a very busy month for the youth sector within the Malta Basketball Association (MBA) with various national teams competing in official FIBA champion-ships.

Two of the teams will be in action this week as the girls U-18 side will be playing in Gibraltar and the boys U-16 squad compete in San Marino.

Under the guidance of Sandro Farrugia, the U-18 girls will be out to defend the silver medal won last in year in Andorra in the same tournament.

Farrugia’s team will play the first game this evening against Andorra. The other matches will be against Scotland (tomorrow); Gibraltar (Wednesday) and Wales (Friday).

The Under-16 boys are the defending gold medallists in their category. They are coached by Gabriele Alesse and have been drawn in Group A along with Albania, Andorra and San Marino for the first phase of the European competition.

Their first opponents in the group will be Andorra this afternoon before matches against Albania, tomorrow, and hosts San Marino on Wednesday.

These two teams will not be the only national youth sides in action at this particular time of the year.

In fact, the U-18 boys team will be travelling to Gibraltar to play in the European Division C Cham-pionships next week and the girls U-16 squad will be playing in An-dorra between July 21 and 26.

Meanwhile, an Under-17 selection, under the guidance of Fabrizio Mariani, is gearing up for the FISEC Games, starting next Thursday.
