Six months ago the Malta Community Chest Fund succeeded, through L-Istrina, in raising €3.65 million.

On June 25 on Net TV, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and her husband Edgar once again appealed to the generosity of the Maltese as the fund was in the red. The presenter looked very emotional and described the situation as “precarious”. This was followed by the President’s repeated message that she was willing, together with her husband, to go out knocking on every door to raise funds. Is this fair on the President?

This situation should no longer be tolerated. Cancer cases are increasing at an alarming rate and ‘referrals’ by doctors to the MCCF to foot the bill for very expensive chemotherapy should be stopped.

I suggest that the government, in the next Budget, injects more money for expensive medicine.

Neither the MCCF nor the public should be expected to shoulder such serious responsibilities.
