The Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta organised a one-day scientific conference entitled ‘Optimising care of the older person’ at the Radisson Blue Resort and Spa Golden Sands, Għajn Tuffieħa.

While commemorating the 10th anniversary of the setting up of the society, the conference provided updates on topical issues in the field of geriatrics, aimed at a multi-disciplinary audience. Sessions were held on falls and fractures, on frailty and comprehensive assessments, on care home medicine and on how to attract trainees to this specialty.

Keynote speakers included UK-based consultant geriatricians Tahir Masud from Nottingham and Simon Conroy from Leicester, together with local consultant psychiatrist David Mamo.

A number of researchers were also invited to present their recent projects. The programme consisted of 12 oral presentations, 34 poster presentations and one round table discussion. Justyne Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, inaugurated the conference.

Over 400 delegates registered for what turned out to be a successful, interactive and educational day. In keeping with its objectives to safeguard the interests and standards of the specialty of geriatrics and to participate in training and accreditation programmes, both locally and abroad, the committee of the Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta intends to continue organising such conferences on a biennial basis.
