The team trying to circle the globe in a solar-powered planehas set a new world record for the longest non-stop solo flight -across the Pacific from Japan to Hawaii .

The solo record was previously set in 2006 by American adventurer Steve Fossett.

The Solar Impulse stayed airborne for three consecutive days and nights to achieve the feat.

It was the first aircraft to fly by day and night without fuel using only energy from the sun.

The next leg of the 35, 000 kilometre journey will be from Honolulu to Phoenix, then across the Atlantic to Abu Dhabi.
