Four environmental non-governmental organisations have called for the resignation of planning authority CEO Johan Buttigieg saying he compromised his autonomy by accepting the government’s request to find suitable sites for the proposed university campus in Marsascala.

The call, by Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA), Friends of the Earth, Youths for the environment and Ramblers, was made in a news conference on the steps of the Prime Minister’s Office at Castille this afternoon.

FAA coordinator Astrid Vella said that Mr Buttigieg was no longer fit for purpose.
“Rather than acting as a regulator and a watchdog to safeguard the environment, Mr Buttigieg is supporting the government,” she said.

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement that “a compromise” through which only part of the proposed campus would be built on undeveloped land in Żonqor, Ms Vella said this was not enough.

The FAA coordinator reiterated the organisation's suggestion for the use of the dilapidated Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara.
