Archbishop Charles Scicluna will be receiving his pallium from the new Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Roberto Cassari in a ceremony at St John’s CoCathedral on July 11.

Archbishop Scicluna received the pallium, an ecclesiastical vestment, from Pope Francis privately after Mass in Rome on Monday.

Up till last year, archbishops used to receive the pallium at a formal ceremony in Rome.

But Pope Francis decided newly appointed archbishops should be formally vested in their own archdiocese by the Apostolic Nuncio to encourage participation of the local church.

The pallium symbolises the the plenitude of pontifical office. Worn by archbishops, it typifies their participation in the supreme pastoral power of the Pope, who concedes it to them for their proper church provinces.
