The international Hockey5s tournaments at the Corradino Complex came to an end with the girls’ competition on Sunday.

Club Italia overcame the sprightly Turkish girls 3-0 after a keen encounter played in very good sporting spirit.

In a play-off for third place, Croatia beat the first Maltese women’s national side 4-0 with the locals giving their all and going close to scoring on more than one occasion.

EHF vice-president Carola Meyer presented medals to the winning team while the silver and bronze tokens were distributed to the runners-up and third-placed team by Natalie Busuttil Leaver and Victoria Tabone.

The player of the tournament was Italian Sara Puglisi.

The boys’ final was an exciting affair, both teams producing their best play as the game become rather feisty towards the end.

Turkey beat Croatia 7-3, scoring four times in the final session after being two goals down earlier in the game.

Chris Busuttil Leaver and Tournament Director David Agius honoured the winners of the tournament. The bronze medals were presented by EHF Education and Development Manager Norman Hughes while the silver medals were presented by Umpires Manager Rob Ten Cate.

Croatia’s Mario Llinovic was named as the men’s tournament best player.

Hughes said all objectives in the two tournaments at Corradino were reached.

“The EHF Hockey5s Mediterranean Cup proved to be hugely successful with all teams improving their play throughout the weekend,” he said.

“The trial rules of the 11 metre shooting zone and the altered board designs proved to be a great success. Now, we have invited Turkey to stage the next 5s tournament in 2016.”

The Hockey5s event was an initiative of the EHF to ensure that this facet of the game becomes a development tool to attract more youths to the sport.

“I am very pleased with the outcome of the event and what I would like to see is that Hockey5s becomes a tool for hockey development so that more people can enjoy our sport,” Agius said.

“This tournament has served to introduce our girls team so we hope that their participation will leave a legacy to help us get more youngsters playing hockey.”
