Road safety will be the main item on the agenda of the 20th FIM-Europe Congress which will be held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior between tomorrow and Saturday.

Almost 300 delegates from 47 affiliated members of the Fédération Internationale de Moto-cyclisme (FIM) will convene in Malta after the local Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi/Karozzi (ASMK) had won the right to host the meeting last year.

Frans Deguara, the ASMK president, told a news conference yesterday that his organisation was proud and fully prepared to be playing hosts to such an important event.

“It’s a great honour for our association to be given the opportunity to stage this FIM-Europe congress here in Malta,” he said.

“The three-day meeting will include various workshops and meetings by the sporting and non-sporting councils.

“They will discuss different items among which the development of electronics on motor-cycles.

“During the congress officials from Transport Malta will attend and address the delegates present. They will highlight the local situation on motorcycling safety on Maltese roads.”

The FIM-Europe Congress gets under way tomorrow with the opening session at 2pm. The meeting will come to a close with various other talks and an official dinner at the Verdala Palace on Saturday evening.

Alessandro Sambuco, the FIM-Europe general secretary was present for the launching of the congress yesterday.

He told reporters that the European governing body had invited engineers from German electronics manufacturers Bosch to attend the meeting this week.

They will discuss the latest technology on the market.

“This is a very important congress as it will discuss road safety for motorcyclists,” Sambuco explained.

“At last year’s congress in Greece we thoroughly discussed safety measures at our racing circuits but in Malta the emphasis will be on road safety for motorcyclists. The technical people from Bosch will give us an insight on the latest updates and the technology available.

“Since its foundation the FIM has always put a lot of emphasis on road safety besides embarking on new initiatives to try and bring down the number of accidents on our roads.

“I’m sure that this week’s meeting will help us make another step towards making our roads a safer place for our members and the public in general.”
