The ASA National Swimming Championships, held at the National Pool, Tal-Qroqq, from Friday to Sunday, produced three national records, two age-group marks and a spate of personal bests.

The highlights of the 70-race event were Julian Harding’s national mark in the 50 metres breaststroke and Nicola Muscat’s in the 50 freestyle.

Harding broke the 29-second barrier in his race when clocking 28.98, improving his previous best of 29.33 seconds.

It was the best technical achievement of the cham-pionship, earning him 779 points in the FINA table.

Muscat’s previous national mark in the 50 free of 26.59 was shattered twice over two days.

She first swam the distance in the first leg of the 4x50 freestyle relay at 26.40 and then followed that up with a 26.19 in the individual event.

The other national record was in the 4x50 freestyle relay event which had the quartet of Harding, Raoul Stafrace, Matthew Galea and Gabriel Dimech bettering the previous mark of 1 minute 36.18 seconds when clocking 1:35.87.

Francesca Falzon Young was the outstanding swimmer in the junior events when setting two Group C records.

She covered the 50 free in 27.58 and the 200 free in 2 minutes 13.17s.

The ASA has announced that Matthew Galea, Matthew Zammit, Nicola Muscat and Shanice Cassar will participate in the forthcoming XXVIII edition of the Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, alongside the retiring swimmers, Edward Caruana Dingli and Daniel Galea, who will both be flag-bearers.
