Rescuers of the Malta Red Cross Society held a life-saving demonstration in Golden Bay this morning.

The rescuers, who maintain vigil over the beach during the summer, demonstrated their training in rescuing people at sea and administering first aid.

“It is vital that bathers observe the rules,” director of operations Robert Brincau stressed.

He explained that green flags meant a beach was suitable for swimming, yellow meant low danger, proceed with caution, red indicated high danger and double red meant it was not suitable for swimming.

Lifeguards are not obliged to assist people who enter the sea when the double red flags are hoisted.

“We urge people to swim within the swimming zones. People with canoes and kayaks are to keep out of the swimming zones and always wear a lifejacket.”
