Balzan FC president Anton Tagliaferro is prepared to sanction the signing of more players over the next two months.

Buoyed by their fourth-place finish in the Premier League, Balzan have been busy in the close season.

They have brought in Malta midfielder Ryan Fenech, Italian goalkeeper Valerio Senatore, Nigerian forward Godwin Mensha and Aleksander Vujacic, a forward from Montenegro, but Tagliaferro is willing to further strengthen Balzan’s squad if the right players became available.

“We have two more months to prepare for the start of the league on August 21 and our opening game against Hibernians,” Tagliaferro, who is based in Australia, told a news conference yesterday.

“We still have time to further strengthen the squad. Our current squad is more or less the same as last season and we are happy with the players we have.

“But we have another two months to look around and see where we can further improve our team.”

Earlier this month, Balzan were linked with a move for Andrew Cohen but Tagliaferro denied that his club have held talks about signing the Hibs captain. “I have never spoken to Andrew Cohen,” Tagliaferro said.

Backed by Tagliaferro’s financial input, Balzan have made significant inroads in recent years culminating in their historic qualification for the Europa League.

Their transfer activity in the last two years leaves no room for doubt about Balzan’s lofty ambitions and Tagliaferro is determined to keep the momentum going.

“I don’t like to make concrete ambitions,” Tagliaferro replied when asked if Balzan were aiming to challenge for the title this season.

“In life, you always try to do better.

“We are realistic and we believe that we will have another good season.

“I don’t expect us to be fighting against relegation, hopefully we will again be challenging for a top-four spot.”
