Let’s compare the cost of buying an English newspaper in Malta and buying the same English newspaper in England. As an example, the cost of the Sunday Express is, I believe, currently €3 if bought in Malta and £1 if bought in England. Besides that, the price of a weekday newspaper is €2.20 and if bought in England it is around 50 pence.

In Malta you receive the newspaper only, while in England at the weekend you receive separate interesting magazines and comprehensive English TV programme guides for the whole week, which all forms part of the ‘package’ when you buy a newspaper. Nowadays, a lot of people are able to receive English TV channels at home in Malta and the guide and articles are useful.

Are we getting value for money if we buy an English newspaper in Malta? No we aren’t. Why should we have to pay a lot more for a newspaper which is locally printed and not therefore imported and which does not include the accompanying magazines, TV guides and advertising?
