A convicted prostitute with a 16-page criminal record was jailed for three months after pleading guilty to the possession of heroin while in prison three years ago.

Jacqueline Rapinett, 38, was found carrying heroin during a random search at the Corradino Correctional Facility on October 7, 2012.

Given the admission, Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras sentenced her to three months in jail after also considering her voluminous criminal record, which included 23 convictions for loitering and prostitution and four for aggravated theft.

The court was informed that Ms Rapinett was following a residential drug rehabilitation programme and demonstrated the necessary motivation to successfully conclude it. The magistrate said she could not ignore this and therefore imposed the minimum jail term, which Ms Rapinett can serve while attending the residential programme.

Police inspectors Spiridione Zammit and Herman Mula prosecuted.
