Malta Public Transport said today that those who applied for its bus card by June 19 - some 105,000 - would receive their card before July 1, when the cards become effective and the new fare structure is introduced.

The cards to other applicants will be mailed to them in the following days.

It said that 120,000 applications have now been made for the talinja cards and more people have been drafted in to process them.

Card holders will need to top up their cards on www.tallinja.com or official outlets before using them.

The only fare available from July 1 will be cost €2 per journey.

However, those who register for a card before June 30 but do not receive their card in time will be able to make a claim for a refund of the difference in ticket prices, the company said.
