The Nationalist Party wants the Prime Minister to immediately sack Peter Paul Zammit from his new role as security chief for the Commonwealth summit known as CHOGM.

PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami yesterday said that a damning report by the Data Protection Commissioner was proof that Mr Zammit’s position in the sensitive role was no longer tenable.

The report showed how sensitive information about a police inspector had been leaked to Malta Today from a file held at the office of the Police Commissioner when Mr Zammit headed the police force.

“The latest revelations show that the former police commissioner cannot be in any way associated with some form of security,” Dr Fenech Adami said.

Mr Zammit was appointed security coordinator of CHOGM soon after his job as police commissioner was terminated. “It is more than evident this person cannot be trusted,” Dr Fenech Adami said.

The latest revelations show that the former police commissioner cannot be in any way associated with some form of security

Times of Malta last Wednesday revealed that an inquiry by the Data Protection Commissioner found that the managing editor of Malta Today, Saviour Balzan, had presented in court information taken illegally from the personal file of a police inspector.

The file, which according to internal procedures could only be accessed by the police commissioner, had been requested on the specific order of Peter Paul Zammit.

Asked to comment on Mr Zammit’s denial of wrongdoing, Dr Fenech Adami said thatthe former police commissioner should give better explanations.

“He requested the specific file, kept it in his office and now he says it’s not him. Can he tell us who it was then, once the file was only found in his office?” Dr Fenech Adami insisted.

Dr Fenech Adami also had harsh words for Labour Party deputy leader Toni Abela over pressure put on independent authorities to “crucify” three public officials for having communicated through email with PN officials.

While Dr Abela was creaming it off from public funds, he said, the Labour deputy leader wanted to starve three public officials and their young families just for communicating with the PN.

The officials in question have denied Labour allegations that they passed on sensitive information to the PN’s Tonio Fenech.
