Marsaxlokk FC will cease to exist if they fail to elect a new committee by July 10.

The plight of the former Malta champions was discussed during yesterday’s meeting of the Malta FA council, the last for season 2014/15.

Joe Baldacchino, who represents Marsaxlokk on the council, told the assembly that the club was unable to elect a new committee at the last AGM due to a dearth of candidates.

The club’s dire situation is further complicated as, at present, Marsa-xlokk have no paid-up members.

In view of these difficulties, Baldacchino proposed that Marsa-xlokk FC be dissolved but the council decided that the MFA should take over the club’s administration for a definite period in search of a solution.

MFA officials will be striving to encourage the Marsaxlokk fans to join as members in the hope that this will eventually lead to the election of a new committee.

The council agreed that the MFA should suspend the mandatory time-frames for clubs to submit the list of the committee members for the new season in order to give Marsaxlokk another chance to get their house in order.

If the status quo persists until July 10, Marsaxlokk FC will close its doors.

At yesterday’s meeting, Norman Darmanin Demajo, the Malta FA president, spoke about the recent developments at FIFA following Sepp Blatter’s decision to step aside.

Darmanin Demajo said that, amid the on-going talk about the potential candidates for the next FIFA presidential election, all European associations want Michel Platini to stay at the helm of UEFA.

The MFA boss said that he’s still in touch with Prince Ali of Jordan who lost to Blatter in the last month’s election in Zurich. According to Darmanin Demajo, Prince Ali is still considering his options.

For his part, Chris Bonett, the Malta FA vice-president who heads the association’s legal department called for the removal of the rule in the MFA statute that precludes lawyers, notaries and legal procurators from serving as club delegates unless they hold the post of president or secretary.

Dr Bonett said that this regulation is discriminatory and the Chamber of Advocates is prepared to file a constitutional case against the Malta FA if it remains in force.
