A policeman who crashed into a motorcycle as he was driving to work has been charged with the involuntary homicide of the motorcyclist.

Jean-Claude Mangion, 20, from Qrendi, was driving to work just after 5am on January 10 last year when he hit a motorcyclist in Triq il-Konvoy Ta' Santa Maria in Mqabba. The court heard how Clive Brincat, 32, from Floriana, died instantly.

Mr Mangion, a police officer, was charged with causing Mr Brincat's death through negligence, damaging the Piaggio Runner, driving his Peugeot 206 negligently and dangerously, over speeding and committing a crime he was duty-bound to prevent.

Before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, the police officer pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Police Inspector Johann Fenech told the court that the incident took place at around 5.10am on a day when Mr Mangion should have started work at 5am as he was working the first watch shift. The case continues in September.

Lawyer Albert Zerafa appeared for the accused while lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha appeared parte civile for the Brincat family.
