An American-French action thriller, The Lake, will start filming in Malta in July.

The film is considered to be one of the most ambitious international productions and was written by internationally renowned French director Luc Besson.

Mr Besson has been described by critics as “the most Hollywood” of French filmmakers and is known for directing and producing thrillers and action films that are visually rich.

In 1997, he won Best Director and Best French Director for his sci-fi action film The Fifth Element. His action thriller film Taken 2, which came out in 2012, has been France’s biggest export success.

Malta’s Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech said: “We are pleased that such high profile producers like Luc Besson are choosing Malta for their projects. Thanks to a winning combination of attractive incentives and versatile locations, Malta is now competing on a global scale.”

The cast will include last year’s Best Actor Oscar winner for Whiplash, J.K. Simmons, and Charlie Bewley of the Twilight series. The film will be directed by Steve Quale and co-written by Richard Wenk.

Filming in Malta is expected to end in September. Local arrangements are being made by Falkun Films.
