I have a suggestion to make regarding the curriculum of the proposed American Universityof Malta.

I think that the courses offered by the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. would be ideal for a university centrally located in the Mediterranean. They are more relevant to the issues faced in this part of the world than the courses offered by DePaul.

The ‘programmes and institutes’ at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service include the following: The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies; The Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding; The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy; The Center for Security Studies; The School of Public Policy; and The Institute for the Study of International Migration.

Moreover, Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service has had a campus in Qatar since 2005. A similar foreign service campus at the new university, especially in collaboration with prestigious Georgetown, would help to attract foreign students seeking to study international affairs.

I think that the information provided above is sufficient to show that the Jesuit-run Georgetown University has the experience and expertise to collaborate with the American University of Malta, at least in drafting its curriculum. There is still time to do this.

If the new university wants to attract foreign students, it has to offer them, not run-of-the-mill courses on business and technology which any other university can offer, but an education that addresses pressing issues in the Mediterranean area, such as relations with the Muslim world, terrorism, security and migration.
