Promising Maltese rowers, Romario Brignone and Maximilian Mamo – both members of the Bormla Regatta Club – are back in Malta after completing an intensive one-week training camp in the Olympic-style sport at the Leipzig Rowing Academy in Germany.

The programme is part of the Maltese-German rowing project which came to life thanks to the initiative of renowned coach Joe Speck, a regular visitor to the islands and currently engaged with the Leipzig club.

A statement issued by Akade-mischer Ruderverein zu Leipzig yesterday said the Maltese rowers showed a great amount of talent and ambition and it was a pleasure working with them.

“Brignone and Mamo practised in a double-scull boat which they skillfully mastered at the end of their stay in Leipzig,” the German club said.

The highlight of the Maltese-German rowing project last week was a boat-naming ceremony for a privately-sponsored single-scull boat ‘Malta’.

Present for the occasion in Leipzig was the Maltese Ambassador to Germany, Albert Friggieri, as well as high-ranking officials from the German National Rowing Federation.
