Charlotte Wingfield established a new national 100m record yesterday as she came home second at the European Athletics Team Championship Third League, in Azerbaijan.

Wingfield, 20, dashed home in 11.69 seconds to better her previous best mark of 11.79 seconds clocked in Bedford in May.

Earlier this month, Wingfield had lowered the 100m time to 11.71 seconds when winning the short sprint event at the Iceland GSSE. However, her time in Reykjavik was wind-assisted.

Wingfield, who secured 13 points for the Maltese team thanks to her second placing, was beaten to the post by Israel’s Olga Lenskay who clocked 11.61 seconds. Lenka Krsakova, of Slovakia, was third in 11.76.

Fourteen nations are taking part in the championship which is part of the European Games programme. The top four countries at the end of Day Two this evening earn promotion to the second tier of European athletics.

Today, Wingfield will run the 200 metres race.

Malta is fielding a strong squad at the Third League championship and most of the athletes were in action in different track and field events, yesterday.

There was further joy for Malta in the women’s 4x100m relay as Wingfield, Janet Richard, Sarah Busuttil and Rachel Fitz set a new national mark of 46.24 seconds. The Maltese quartet won their heat ahead of Andorra and placed fifth overall, picking up another 10 points in the process.

The men’s relay team were disqualified.

Richard achieved another good result, finishing fourth in the 400m with a seasonal best of 55.06 seconds. Slovakia’s Iveta Putalova won the race in 53.07 seconds.

In the triple jump, Rebecca Sarè cleared 12.13m, her best this season, to finish seventh in a field of 13 competitors.
