The High Commission of India in Malta will hold the first ‘International Day of Yoga’ today from 8.30 to 10.30am at Bastion Terrace, Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana. An Indian yoga expert will visit Malta specifically for the event.

All yoga enthusiasts and others are invited to participate in the event, which will last about 75 minutes. Entry is free.

Malta was one of the 177 countries that co-sponsored a resolution moved by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, in the United Nations General Assembly declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The resolution was passed on December 11 in a record time of 75 days. The high commission said the overwhelming global support for the resolution was a mark of yoga’s growing international popularity.

Yoga is widely considered as an immortal cultural outcome of Indus valley civilisation dating back to 2700 BC. The practice of yoga leads a perfect harmony between the mind and body, man and nature. Its aim is to overcome all kinds of suffering and the preservation, maintenance and promotion of health.

The event, which has been endorsed by TV presenter, producer and animal activist Moira Delia, is organised in collaboration with India Tourism Office in Milan, Italy, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in New Delhi and the Grand Hotel Excelsior.
