Hibernians captain Andrew Cohen has just been named Malta FA footballer of the year for season 2014/15.

Cohen’s victory puts him alongside former Valletta talisman Gilbert Agius as the two most successful players in the history of this award with three nominations.

The 34-year-old Malta playmaker was widely seen as favourite to claim the top award after inspiring Hibernians to their first Premier League title in six years.

The other candidates for the honour were Hibernians duo Clayton Failla and Andrei Agius and Birkirkara’s Paul Fenech and Zach Muscat.

Cohen, who also clinched the top accolade at the Malta Football Players Association awards, received the trophy from Malta FA president Norman Darmanin Demajo during a well-organised ceremony at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Hibernians were the big winners during this evening’s MFA Awards as Branko Nisevic was named best coach and Brazilian striker Luis Edison ‘Tarabai’, now playing in South Korea, was voted best foreigner.

Ryan Camenzuli, the Birkirkara winger, took the best young player award.
