The World Travel and Tourism Council published a report on the economic impact of tourism in Malta which raises some interesting points to ponder. It also compares Malta’s performance in 2013 with world and European figures. Here are a few highlights.

26.4%

The percentage of total employment from tourism represents 45,500 jobs – compared to world percentage of 8.9 per cent and Europe’s of 8.5 per cent.This is forecast to grow to 56,000 jobs by 2024.

The total contribution from foreign travel and tourism in 2013.

This is forecast to rise to €1.7 billion by 2024.

Travel and tourism’s contribution to GDP, compared to the world percentage of 9.5 per cent and Europe’s of 8.7 per cent.

Malta’s country ranking of the growth in tourism’s contribution to GDP for 2014, which stood at 4.5 per cent.
