This week, the Eden SuperBowl is hosting the 24th edition of the Malta Open Championships, an event which has remained one of the best and most popular on the European tenpin circuit since its inception in 1992.

No fewer than 120 top international bowlers, hailing from 18 different nations, are registered to take part in this year’s tournament. Competitive play begins today with a series of 12 qualifying squads, each comprising six games.

All participants must play an arbitrary two squads in order to amass a 12-game qualifying total. They will then have the opportunity to play a six-game ‘re-entry’ which would allow them to replace the low series from their original two sets with the aim of improving on their original qualification total.

A total of 32 bowlers will advance to the latter stages in this way. Once all qualifying squads are completed, a single game ‘desperado’ squad will be played, from which a further four bowlers will qualify, on just that single game score. That would take the total number in the final stages up to 36 in all.

The final stages will be played on Sunday, starting early with two more qualification rounds in the morning, each of four games, which will whittle the qualifiers down to the top 16.

This will be followed by a series of three KO stages with eight bowlers competing in the quarter-finals, going down to four for the semis, from which the two winning bowlers will move on to the Grand Final. They will play over two games to decide the 2015 Malta Open champion.

Other than a trophy and the prestigious tournament title, the new champion will also walk away with a fitting share of the €12,000 cash prize fund, put up by the tournament sponsors – the Eden Leisure Group.

The Malta Open Champion-ships are also supported by Cisk – the official beer of the tournament.

All scores can be found at www.edensuperbowl.com, while there will be real-time international coverage of the event, including live-streaming courtesy of Dom Gall on behalf of top European website, www.talktenpin.net who are here to cover the championships.

Under-18 incentive

For the second year in a row, the Eden SuperBowl team are offering a special incentive for Malta’s enthusiastic squad of Under-18 bowlers who, while also competing as regular participants in the Malta Open, will also be vying for the top spot in that particular age-group.

The junior bowlers have been given a special half-price concession on the tournament entry fee by the Eden SuperBowl.

This offer helped to attract the country’s most promising youngsters to register for the tournament, enabling them to gain invaluable experience of competing in a top-rank international event, also giving them the chance of adding to their bowling arsenal thanks to the support of Bowltech UK Limited, who are providing the top youngsters with the latest bowling balls in the market by way of prizes.
