The Malta U-17 team ended their Group D commitments in the European Games with an 18-3 defeat to Serbia at the Waterpolo Arena in Baku yesterday.

As the scoreline clearly shows, the Serbians were a cut above the Maltese outfit who were already trailing 4-1 by the end of the first session.

The Serbians continued to increase their advantage in the second session to head into the half-time interval with a commanding 10-1 lead.

Malta managed to limit the damage in the third session as Serbia won the quarter 3-1 to start the last 10 minutes 13-2 ahead.

The Serbian boys regained their scoring touch in the final quarter, netting five times to Malta’s one to complete an 18-3 victory.

Jasmin Kolasinac, Dragoljub Rogab and Marko Jankovic were Serbia’s leading scorers with a hat-trick.

Ben Plumpton grabbed a brace for Malta with the other goal coming from David Fenech.

In yesterday’s other Group D game, Spain made it three wins out of three when they beat Slovakia 14-9 to finish top of the pool ahead of Serbia.

Today, Malta face home side Azerbaijan in the classification matches.
