Only two of 33 trees uprooted from Castille Place in Valletta died, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said in Parliament this evening.

Replying to a number of questions by Nationalist MP Toni Bezzina, Mr Mizzi said that 12 of the 45 trees originally in place had been left on site. The others had been successfully replanted in various parts of Malta.

Mr Mizzi said the consultant who had come to Malta to oversee the uprooting and replanting had so far been paid €4,832.52. His visit had been agreed beforehand with the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar.

Accommodation and other costs to date amounted to €2,117.89.
