The Malta Rugby Football Union’s women’s sevens team will participate in the forthcoming European Nations Cup Division B, to be held on June 20 and 21 in Zagreb, Croatia.

This tournament is part of the Olympic qualifying campaign since rugby sevens has been recognised as an Olympic sport and will make its debut at the 2016 Games in Rio.

The 12 teams making up Division B have been divided into three groups.

Malta have been drawn in Pool B along with hosts Croatia, Luxembourg and Austria.

A squad of 12 players is flying out to Croatia this week.

A host of experienced players, the likes of captain Marion Azzopardi and sisters Beverie and Tessabelle Sultana, are back in Malta’s fold while five newcomers are expected to make their international debut in this year’s tournament.

The members of the Malta women’s sevens squad have been training regularly under the guidance of Carmelo Longo and Damian Neill, the MRFU director of rugby.

The Maltese ladies are aiming to improve on last year’s fifth position.

Hungary, the 2014 winners, went on to compete in Division A this year.
