To date Mcast had offered degrees at to bachelor level (level six).

The changeover will be brought in over the next three years.

The current 10 institutes and two centres will be re-alligned into six institutes to better meet industry needs.

Dr Debono said the ultimate aim was to ensure greater autonomy to the institutes as well as more flexibility.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said there would not be competition with the University of Malta, but rather, the two institutions would be working to reach a wider cross-section of students.

The new institutes will be: Engineering and transport; Business; ICT; Creative Arts; Applied Sciences; and Community services.

The maritime training centre and the aviation centre will fall under engineering and transport. The centre for agriculture and aquatics and animal sciences will fall within the applied sciences institute.
